Essay: "In 15-20 years, I think I envision the Cambodian society having more opportunities.  There will be more Cambodian people coming to America, but there might also be Cambodian people with high position jobs like lawyers, doctors or senators."

Topic:  3) a. What is the main problem the Cambodian community faces in today’s society and how would you go about solving it?

  1. In 15-20 years how do you envision the Cambodian society as a whole.

The Cambodian Society

The main problem in today’s society that the Cambodian community faces is the language barrier.  There are many Cambodian people that face language barriers, because their English skills aren’t so good.  Most Cambodian students are in ESL or low English classes because they are unable to speak or understand English.  There are some adults who had high position jobs back in Cambodian but once they came to America, they had to take lower jobs, because they are unable to speak English.  They might have the education and knowledge for a certain job but if they cannot speak or understand English, then they are unable to do that job.  For most Cambodian people, English is their second language unless they were born and raised in America.  There are some Cambodian people that do not speak, read, write or understand Cambodian, because they were brought up more Americanized.

I think a way to solve the problem for second language speakers is to have more classes being offered on how to read, write, speak and to understand English.  The younger Cambodian generation goes to school, so they can get help on the English language.  But unlike Cambodian adults, there is no school for them to attend and there is nothing offered for them to learn English.  So, I think there should be more places, like an adult school, a recreation center, church  or even a temple where courses of the basic English language is being offered to teach the second language speakers.

In 15-20 years, I think I envision the Cambodian society having more opportunities.  There will be more Cambodian people coming to America, but there might also be Cambodian people with high position jobs like lawyers, doctors or senators.  Many things will change in the next 15-20 years and having another ethnic background besides white running for a position is most likely to change.  I also envision the Cambodian society spreading out more instead of staying in one area where there are a lot of Cambodian people.  Also, the Cambodian society will be more open to anything that is offered and there will be more educated people.
