The major problem that the
Cambodian community faces in
today’s society is a
generation gap. Especially here
in America, Cambodian parents
and their children encounter
numerous problems because of
their generation gap. Such
problems are the differences in
thinking, values and way of
life. Cambodian children who
grew up in America find it
difficult to communicate with
their parents because they feel
that their parents do not
understand where they are coming
from. It seems like there is a
barrier among the parents and
children. One factor is the
language barrier. I notice that
many of my friends here in
America have a difficulty
speaking to their parents in the
Khmer language so they speak
Khmer mix with English which
leads to a communication problem
because the parents might be
limited in English and this
causes both sides to become
frustrated. The parents don’t
understand their children so it
is hard to establish a good
relationship when there is
miscommunication due to
language. I have a close
relationship with my mom and dad
because I can speak to them in
Khmer fluently and they
understand me clearly. To go
about solving such a problem,
the younger Cambodian generation
must attempt and make an extra
effort to use the Cambodian
language more often and practice
speaking it more frequently,
only this way will they be able
to improve their speaking
skills. This will allow them to
communicate better with their
parents so there is no
misunderstand and frustration.
Another problem in our
Cambodian community is that
Cambodian parents have a
difficulty adjusting and
accepting the American values.
Since they came from a
conservative country where
values and traditions are
different, they want to preserve
their cultural values so that
the Cambodian culture is not
lost. They refuse to accept the
American ideals that their
children who grew up in America
have learn to accept. This
creates a big problem. It is
hard for a Cambodian-American
child like myself to always
follow the Cambodian cultural
values because I am here in
America, a society that is very
different from Cambodia. For
example in Cambodia, women are
taught to be passive and are not
equal to men. Their role is
different from women in America.
The women in Cambodia stays home
and watches her children while
her husband goes to work. I
notice that in America, men and
women both work. Women are
taught that they have the
ability to do whatever they
want, there is equality among
men and women. One way we as
Cambodian Americans can solve
this problem is to educate and
explain to our parents that
growing up in America is not the
same like in Cambodia. Things
are always changing in today’s
society and they must accept
that we cannot always be like
them. The parents in return must
be willing to open their minds
and hearts to their children for
only then will they be able to
understand where their child is
coming from. We as the children
must make our parents understand
that no matter what, we are
still holding on to the
Cambodian values, but at the
same time we have learned to
accept American values too
because we are growing up in
America.
In fifteen to twenty years from now, I envision the
Cambodian society to be a very
stable and better than it is
today. When all Cambodians unite
and work together, we can make
anything happen and everyone
benefits as a whole. I feel that
many Cambodians, especially the
younger Cambodian generation is
going to make a big difference
in our society because more and
more Cambodians are going to
college compared to ten years
ago. It is the younger Cambodian
generation that is going to be
the future leaders of America. I
feel that the Cambodian
community will benefit highly
from the younger generation. We
will make the world recognize us
for who we really are through
our rich and beautiful culture.
The more education we have the
more we can achieve our goals
and built a stronger Cambodian
community. I sincerely believe
that the Cambodian society will
be stronger and much more
prosperous in the future because
of the younger Cambodian youths
like myself who is determine to
make a difference in our
society.
